Stella Adler Acting Technique

As it says on my 'about me' I am a student of acting, my acting coach was taught by the 3 most acclaimed acting teachers, he studied with Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner, and at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg. I just finished my first workshop based on the Stella Adler's technique (next I start on the Meisner technique and finally Lee Strasberg's "method") and in honor of finishing I wanted to do a blog about Miss Adler and her technique.

Stella Alder was born in 1901, by the age of 4 she was acting on stage. She made her London debut at the age of 18, and her Broadway debut in 1922.

In 1931 she joined the Group Theatre founded by Harold Clurman, Lee Strasberg and Cheryl Crawford, the group was the leading interpreters of the Method acting technique based on the works of Konstantin Stanislavski. In 1934 she broke away from Lee Strasberg on the fundamentals of Method acting, she believed that the actor should create by imagination rather than by "affective memory" as Lee Strasberg believed.

In 1937 she moved to Hollywood where she acted in films under the name Stella Ardler, she was in Shadow of the Thin Man, Love on Toast, and My Girl Tisa.

She moved back to New York City in 1941 and began to teach, in 1949 she founded the Stella Adler Conservatory. She was the only American actor to be instructed in the art of acting by Konstantin Stanislavski. Stella's technique is what Stanislavski taught her in the two weeks she studies privately with him, that the imaginary circumstances, all the emotions in the script would surface organically.

Some of the actors Stella taught are: Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Warren Beatty, Salma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro, Melanie Griffith, Mark Ruffalo, among a long list of others.

She died in 1992. The acting studios Stella founded in New York and Los Angeles are still in operation today.

Red-Heads!

So I am having some writers block, and I've been thinking of posting this for awhile, so why not now?

I have always loved red hair, and I am disappointed my blonde hair is fried beyond belief that I can't be one!

So to real red-heads, faux ones, and red-heads that weren't red too long!

Ann Margaret

Lucille Ball

Katharine Hepburn

Maureen O'Hara

Rita Hayworth

Sophia Loren

Greer Garson

Ann Sheridan

Did I miss any classic redheads who should be on this list? Suggestions?

Drew Barrymore in Grey Gardens

The other night I watched 'Grey Gardens' with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. The movie goes between the 1930s-1970s and some of the costumes representing the earlier decades are really beautiful. Not to mention, I think the acting in this was really great. I think the quality of this film far surpasses what I think of when I hear "made for TV movie". This is a film I wouldn't have minded at all seeing in a theatre.

Anyway, I dug up some pictures of Drew in this movie online and I thought they would be fun to share. And for those of you who haven't seen this film and are interested, I definitely recommend seeing it!

Atomic Ranch Magazine

I was in Borders the other day picking up some magazines and I came across this little gem in the home section, Atomic Ranch magazine.

I don't know if any of you have read it but I was really excited to see a magazine for such a particular interest.

From their website:  "Atomic Ranch celebrates midcentury houses—from 1940s ranch tracts to 1960s architect-designed modernist homes. With an emphasis on affordable solutions and homeowner renovations, our quarterly magazine shows you how to make your house cool, both inside and out. Launched in 2004, Atomic Ranch is published in Portland, Oregon."

The magazine features some before and afters, and even tells you about the latest atomic events, related book reviews, and has interesting articles (even the advertisements are related to decorating atomic). This is a nice to read for a modernist lover. It is a little pricey at 6.95, but it is a seasonal magazine and I would recommend to check it out if you haven't already.

Visit the website to check out the current issue, or order back issues.

So has anyone else heard of this magazine? I can't believe I hadn't found it sooner!

Lana Turner and her Estate

I was browsing e-bay for some midcentury collectors goodies and I stumbled across something really interesting, a pair of Lana Turner's earrings for sale.

I couldn't help but to look on and it turns out her daughter is selling alot of items from her estate on e-bay. Items range from 40 dollars- 5 thousand. You have the chance to pick up a piece of history. For some reason I find this so fascinating that her daughter is doing this, I mean, wouldn't you love to hang onto all of it?

If anyone is interested, you can do find the items up for auction here.

And a bit about Lana:

Lana was signed to a contract at MGM at the age of 16 in 1937. She established parts as a leading actress in the 1940s, but is perhaps remembered most for her performance in 'Peyton Place' (1957). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role.

In her personal life, Lana was married eight times to seven different husbands.  Interestingly enough, in 1958 in the peak of her career her 14 year old daughter (Cheryl, the woman with the auction) stabbed Lana's then boyfriend Johnny Stompanato during a violent argument he was having with Lana.

Lana did some television in the 70s' and 80s' and ultimately died in 1995 from throat cancer.

Terrible story aside here are some photos of the beautiful Lana:

Marabou Slippers

So I finally purchased myself a pair of Marabou slippers off of Ebay. I have been wanting a pair since I was a little girl. I think the first time I ever saw them was with my mother shopping in Fredericks' of Hollywood. I remember being very little and thinking they were so glamourous.

Well, it has been long enough. I finally sat down and bought a pair of red ones. They are waiting for me at the post office and I can't wait to pick them up on Monday!

And if you are interested in owning your own pair of Marabou slippers, check out some of these deals:
